Santa is coming!

Isn’t he a rather handsome Santa…

Elaine Santa

Elaine Peden, one of our group,  made him at the monthly drop in session with Feltmaker’s Ireland in their studio in the Pheonix Park. The sessions take place on the first Sunday of the month – details on their website http://feltmakersireland.com/.

If you know the basics of felting and want to have a go at making a similar Santa, Elaine has shared her instructions :

“If anyone wants to make a Santa’s hat it is very simple.  I was having so much fun chatting away that I didn’t measure the height so my version has a rather extended hat!   Cut out a resist in the shape of a triangle.. four layers of fibre either side – I used red but you could mix it with another seasonal colour such as green but I don’t think it would work as well.   Don’t use soap at this stage.  Add the face (two layers of white fibre).  Then make a felt rope leaving one end untouched, and attach this end to santa’s hat and work gently until it is secure.  Then I just felt away!    Once dry, I needle felted some Wesleydale fibres for a 3D beard.    The original pattern and idea came from Gabrielle McGrath, a Hungarian artist – and I added the rope hat and 3D beard!” Elaine

Happy Christmas and every good wish for a creative 2016!
